One calamity does not seem to be succeeding the next, but rather everything is happening at once: pandemic, war, natural disasters. Instead of looking for ways out, many find it easier to blame others, to seek refuge in superstitions – today we call them “conspiracy theories” – and to be satisfied with monocausal explanations. Crises demand flexibility and creativity. Wolfgang Becksteiner’s Corona sculpture Distanced Closeness (2020/21) symbolizes a path: “Proceeding onward amidst the hardship is understood as a symbol of coping.”
