Such ovens were found on many farms at a time when people still baked their own bread in the farmhouse. As people did not want to have the 250 to 300 degrees of heat needed to bake bread indoors for various reasons, the ovens were built outdoors. The oven is first heated with wood. Once the required heat has been reached after around 1 ½ hours, fire residues and ash are removed from the oven and the baking surface is cleaned. The dough, which has now risen, can now be placed in the oven using an oven dish. After approx. 1 hour baking time, the baked loaves can be removed from the oven with the oven dish.
