The Danish art collective SUPERFLEX has concerned itself with value creation processes, alternative economies, self-organization and ethical action for many years. They are well-known among members of the art scene for their critical opinions.
In Graz and the Kunsthaus, the group will complete several projects over a total of five years.
In 2017, they started with C.R.E.A.M., the fetish ATM in the heart of the Kunsthaus Foyer. In 2018, SUPERFLEX created the Free Shop in Graz, 2019Number of Visitors (with Jens Haaning) was implemented at the main entrance, and in 2020 Lost Money / Handful followed. These projects all address the fetishization of money (C.R.E.A.M.), the collapse of value (Free Shop) and the factors of value in the Kunsthaus–which range from the value of an asset to symbolic value–(Number of Visitors). The finale will be a solo exhibition of works by the art collective, to be held in 2021.
Five-year plan
By choosing to complete these projects over a span of five years, SUPERFLEX refers to the Five-Year Plan principle, which is an instrument that has been used to plan economic activities in countries that support Marxist-Socialist tenets. Five-year plans are centralized, set economic variables such as investment, prices and wages and include allocations and specifications for the production and services to be provided. SUPERFLEX is now applying this principle to the multi-year plan at the Kunsthaus.
