About the
Project

For the project Open fields – art and agriculture the Institute of Art in Public Space Styria invited local farmers to host artists and their projects. In an Open Call 12 diverse art projects by national and international artists were chosen to be realized on different Styrian farms.

In Altaussee the project by the Austrian composer Katharina Klement was realized. In August 2022 she spent several weeks on the Mühlberg-farm (Fischerndorf 28) with the resident farmer Eva Schartner. Here she explored the agriculture of the region and the resulting sound phenomena. On May 13th, 2023, the result of this exploration Ecophony – every voice counts. An acoustic soil survey was presented in the form of a sound hiking trail.

With a total of 14 stations this trail makes the farm in Altaussee, its past, present, and future, as well as the surrounding landscape an audio-experience.  The sound installations explore a variety of the region’s facets. For example, it includes an acoustic examination of the region’s most well-known mountain, the Loser, as well as the experience of natural forces such as wind and water. Furthermore, even the behaviour of bees as well as the history of the Mühlberg-farms name are topics included.

On top of that, visitors can become active participants in this project by adding their own recordings. All sounds, noises and voices shaping the region Altaussee are welcome.
