As the name suggests, steam or sweat baths were once prepared in the log-built parlour, as in a sauna. These baths, which were very beneficial to health, were banned as immoral in the 18th century, and it was a long time before the bath found its way back into farmhouses. Eventually, the bathing parlours, which were equipped with a brick oven, were only used for drying and crushing. The name ‘Brechel-Badstuben’ still refers to the functions of bathing and crushing.
