The ‘airy’ log barn was built on stilts to protect the grain stored in the barn from mice and other rodents. The supports, which serve as a ‘mouse defence’, are strongly tapered towards their upper end and carry a precisely offset ‘head’ above this taper, the smooth horizontal underside of which is intended to prevent unwanted predators from gaining access to the coveted food. The flat sloping purlin roof, which protrudes far out on all four sides, is covered with shingles.
