In the area of the Fischbach Alps, such crosses were erected as protection against storms. The crosses served as a place of devotion and rest for travellers on their way from Vorau Abbey to Mariazell. Today, the middle cross with the three crossbars is reminiscent of the Orthodox cross, but here it symbolises the Holy Trinity. On the Krieglacher Sommerberg, a vantage point favoured by Peter Rosegger, weather crosses can still be seen today. The same applies to the area around Wenigzell and Vorau.
