The canopied cross with a boarded back wall is still a widespread form of field cross today. A special feature of some crosses in the area around Vorau was the so-called cross nail. Its veneration originated from the cross brotherhood at the Vorau cross church. The veneration of the so-called kissing or indulgence nail was once very widespread among pilgrims as a custom to kiss the cross nail on Fridays - especially on Good Friday.
