Portraits are among the oldest topics in the visual arts and have always reflected cultural-historical phenomena - right down to the "selfies" that permeate our lives and shape our age of social media. The exhibition, which will be presented in a modified form from the end of February 2018, spans an arc from the 19th century to the interwar period and the harbingers of "mass culture" in Pop Art to current portraits in new media.
Portraits, along with landscape are the most common artworks in the Neue Galerie Graz collection. This exhibit aims to examine portraits, their diverse references as well as their cultural-historical and social statements with a fresh look and often unfamiliar context. The large period of observation of more than 200 years makes it possible to contrast present phenomena with historical ones and vice versa.
