The modern working world is changing rapidly. Traditional professions and fixed working hours are often a thing of the past. Sometimes work is exhausting, sometimes it secures our existence and sometimes it is really fun. It is varied and flexible, but can also be rigid and monotonous. At its best, it challenges us positively and gives life meaning.  

At the Open House, we get to work.  Many thousands of buttons symbolise this and are waiting to be worked on in Space03. Together with ‘Heidenspass’, we produce practical items for the home with the sewing machine in the Needle. With the ‘Talent Exchange’ association, we can swap our skills for others in Space04 and help each other with our work without paying for it. How much ‘work’ does a family actually do? We take a closer look at this with the Graz Women's Council.

How alive is the nature of things?

And what place do we have in it as inhabitants of the earth? At the open house weben.wirken.wachsen, we take the exhibition Ingrid Wiener, Martin Roth. From far away you can see more into a network of carpets, dreams, environments, things and non-human beings. Together with artists and local cooperation partners, we discover artistic techniques and climate-friendly ways of thinking through the lens of art. With open participatory stations and tours, a diverse programme of hands-on activities invites all interested parties to experiment, question, do and relate to all the other inhabitants of the earth.

How can art be created from old plastic sheets, records or fabrics and how is pop art made from them?

At the Open House - PoP! we take a closer look at the artists in the Amazons of Pop! exhibition and the background to their works. Discover different approaches to pop art with us, experiment with a wide variety of materials and get into conversation during guided tours of the exhibition!

Together with the artists, the Open House offers a varied programme for everyone aged 4 to 99 to join in and try things out!

What do we need to unlearn in 2021 so that we are well equipped for 2050?

And what do we need to learn in order to strengthen the skills that are important for the future and will not be taken over by machines?

As we know, education is more than just training - and educational work at museums is the core task of art education. So on 17 June, we will be devoting ourselves entirely to learning, unlearning and creative experimentation - because only free space creates space for thought and action.

The art education team is organising the hands-on programme together with RISOGRAD (Risodruck collective in Graz) and Daniela Brasil (artist).

How do traditional craft techniques and contemporary art go together?

Together with artists, the Open House offers a varied programme for everyone aged 4 to 99 to join in and try out!

Gothic building huts as contemporary room installations and making your own bristly brooms? Cocoons made from ramie fibres and weaving in the grand style of clothing? Together with artists from Graz and the Odilien Institute, we will explore traditional craft techniques and discover their potential through the lens of art. Following on from the exhibition Art ⇆ Crafts, we are offering a varied programme at the ‘Open House’ that invites you to explore the themes of the exhibition through your own actions. Join in and discover what is possible with wood, straw, natural fibres, polyester, plaster, brushwood and your own hands - or leave your mark in collective artworks and participatory stations!

Screen printing, sound and networked spaces

This autumn, the art education team is designing and organising an open house with the themes of screen printing, sound and networked spaces. This builds on the artistic positions in the Connected exhibition.

Big Wirbel

In 2017, a new series was launched for the first time under the title ‘Big Wirbel’, which will set a two-day focus each year under the motto Material and Technology, expanding the content of the exhibition programme. In 2017, it is textiles.
