The application programmed by m.ash is based on the control system of the popular computer game Snake. The program was recorded on video in the form of a live session in real time and was not edited afterwards. The dichotomies of algorithmic automation versus manual intervention and chance (generator) versus fixed dramaturgy construct the basic formative structure.
At the very beginning, a small, white pixel can be seen on a black background, moving orthogonally and describing the shape of a square on the screen. As the number of rectangles increases, they move into the third dimension and transform into cubes. These in turn form chains that seem to be restlessly searching for an exit from a larger invisible cube that forms the boundary of their digital universe.
The technically designed sound by Chris Janka serves as a directional impulse generator. As is often the case with computer games, cubica also allows you to choose your viewpoint; sometimes you see the situation from the outside, then suddenly you switch to the "subjective view" and sit in the head of one of the countless "snakes", so to speak, chasing through a scale- and horizonless world of cubes. This work, based on the ideal shape of the square or cube, offers a fascinating spectacle for all those who enjoy formal precision and perfection.
