About the
Event

Dioramas were already in use in museums of nature, technology, history and ethnology in the 19th century. For museum experts, they were an opportunity to create the illusion of reality and to display the objects in context. For visitors, they suggested a glimpse into past or distant worlds. Meanwhile, dioramas have become less relevant to the recent history of exhibition design due to the cost and effort of their production and their static nature. In this event, we raise the question of the future of this didactic medium: Have dioramas become things of the past, or do they still enable forms of visualization unachievable by other means? What can dioramas do that mise-en-scènes or films cannot? What possibilities are there for the technological development of the medium? We will take a look at the history of museums, analyse selected dioramas, and try our hand at building miniature dioramas.
