Marina Stiegler gives insights into her work wERDEN_Frauenberg as part of Frauenmärz 2025. In the summer of 2024, the artist created sculptures in front of the Frauenberg Temple Museum that are made of natural materials and exposed to the weather. She sees the ephemeral art action on the eternal cycle of becoming and passing as a tribute to the feminine principle and the goddess.
Frauenberg in Leibnitz is one of the oldest cult sites in Styria. From Celtic goddesses to the Roman Isis-Noreia to the Christian veneration of the Virgin Mary, the place has been a place of worship for women for thousands of years. Recently, 17 statuettes of wet-nurse goddesses with children sitting on their laps were found there. The heads of these protectors of life were probably cut off in the 4th century during the Christianization process.
Marina Stiegler has responded to the absence of the heads with a circle of heads made of clay and plant seeds. Since the summer, wind and weather have been inscribed in the sculptures.
We meet at the installation wERDEN_Frauenberg and observe how the clay sculptures have changed with the weather. What has become, what has passed, what will be when spring comes?
