Agricultural Circle

In Reference to the Minimal and Land Art of the sixties, which had artists creating large-scale works made of simplistic elements such as lines, spirals and circles in the preexisting landscape outside of closed off art spaces, Rainer Nöbauer-Kammerer created his deliberately temporary project written into the ground.

Three coloured circles with a diameter of 50 meters are layered and connected. They are made of substances sourced from their immediate surroundings, black earth colours, white calk, and red iron oxide. Thus, the artist opens up a site-specific space visible from afar. He puts it in relation to us, arouses our curiosity, and makes new experiences and reflexions possible.

He experimented with the extraction of these colours from a variety of materials at the “Hirzhof” owned by Gerhard Schüttbacher. This organic farm, practicing direct marketing of their animal products, is located 1.200 m above sea level in the Schladming-Dachstein region.
