...und weiter?! (...and then what?!)

With the cooperative project …und weiter?! (…and then what?!) the Institute of Public Art Styria connects art with youth work. Artists work with local adolescents in three Styrian communities: Bruck an der Mur, Voitsberg and Lebring to create three art works unique to the respective community.

Manuel Gorkiewicz, Mural

A large-format mural emerged on the outside walls of the youth center in collaboration between the artist Manuel Gorkiewicz and young people. The design was preceded by numerous visits and conversations that led the artist to the Voitsberg Youth Center (JUZ) over the course of several weeks.

In the intensive discussion with the young adults, individual preferences as well as ideological issues were addressed, often in relation to the youth center’s immediate surroundings. In an examination of the mural culture of Central and North America, a special wall painting was developed. Members of local communities there transform monochrome outer walls of residential or industrial buildings into colorful paintings with identity-forming themes. The young persons contributed motifs important to them, which were rendered on the wall as a collage by professional façade painters using spray paint.

This mural is intended to establish a connection between the JUZ and Voitsberg’s town center, and at the same time expand it with a striking, polyphonic work of art.
