It is part of the essence of public monuments to interweave the present and thus everyday urban life with a collective past. In Graz's Stadtpark, too, monuments function both spatially and temporally as fixed points that show us the passing of time as we walk by. Here, however, many a monument has lost its historically reminiscent function and has become a mere backdrop.
Where strict monument protection covers the entire park like a leaden cloak, artists are all the more challenged to become active with subtle interventions and to undermine the all too familiar with their temporary settings: What could conceivable monuments do today? Where are the points of contact with what moves us today? And how temporary can a so-called "monument" actually be?
