Nothing rests; everything moves; everything vibrates

The large wall space of the event space Citypeach is located underneath the main bridge in Graz, which dominates the space visually. During the summer months this location hosts a variety of music events, which provides a platform for young an local artists to present their work, as well as connect with each other and further develop.

In January of 2024 an open call for innovative artistical concepts focusing on Citypeach’s “spirit” was done. The goal was to find a project for the large-scale wall space, which both fits into the spatial circumstances and adds to the visual effect of the location.

Out of 60 submissions a jury consisting of Elisabeth Fiedler (Art in Public Space Styria), Roman Grabner (BRUSEUM), Nicole Pruckermayr (Fachbeirat Kunst im öffentlichen Raum der Stadt Graz), Anna Gynes-Schuchardt (Citypeach), and Ewald Gynes (Citypeach) chose the concept by the Norwegian artist Eilert Asmervik. His artistic practice is in a constant exchange with his music and sound practice. Additional to his traditional art production he creates sound designs, videos, installations, and publications.

In his innovative concept Asmervik creates multifaceted layers of paint transitioning between abstract and figurative visuals. This mirrors the innovative spirit of the event space. He references the on location created sound and impressions by showcasing sound waves and fantasy figures making music in front of a sound system in an exotic environment. Asmerviks artwork made of vibrant colours is positioned at the cultural intersection between public space and event space, as well as between city and river.

At the beginning of the Citypeach’s summer season the artwork will be presented on May 3rd followed by a concert.

Jury Statement

The submission by Eilert Asmervik showcases an innovative concept, which encompasses the locations “spirit”. It does not only fit into the spatial circumstances, consisting of various levels, perfectly but also incorporates the typography of the wall and connects urban and digital. His concept references the on location created sound and impressions by showcasing sound waves and fantasy figures making music in front of a sound system in an mosaicesque exotic environment. He creates multifaceted layers of paint transitioning between abstract and figurative visuals. Thus, even during times when the location is not used for concerts, its function is clearly visible. The dynamic design is strengthened by the implementation of glowing, fluorescent-coloured areas and creates a vibrating impression.
