About the
Project

Here, it is not a matter of manifesting hegemonic claims in the image of the city, but rather of using art to make contact with the public and establish a connection between the sacred zone and the contemporary secular world.

Valentin Ruhry

Rocket Switch

As part of Hermann Glettler’s “Andrä Kunst” project, all 15 windows of the baroque church building were redesigned by artists between 2002 and 2010. The last of this series was Valentin Ruhry’s intervention “Rocket Switch,” which, in contrast to the other works, is neither translucent nor visible from inside. This oversized light switch above the entrance portal of the main facade is set in the reveal of a window blocked from view on the inside by the organ. The function of lighting, which has not been fulfilled since the organ was built, is now turned outwards and thus illuminates the square in front of the church. Just as the baroque facade once communicated with the faithful, an installation now does so in a subtle way using the means of today’s modern language.
