Michael Schuster

Prismenwender (Trivision Panel)

In the course of the renovation of the Joanneum Quarter in 2011, the Institute for Art in Public Space Styria launched an ideas competition for the artistic design of an existing balcony using the medium of light. Michael Schuster unceremoniously encased this in his design with a so-called trivision panel (“Prismenwender” in German), an advertising tool often used in public spaces. In its design, he refers to the discovery of the physicist Isaac Newton that a prism can split light into its color components. Schuster accomplishes this separation by coloring the two sides of the object borrowed from everyday life, with the short side picking up two primary colors that appear as their blended color on the longer side. This artistic intervention is intended to create a link between the scientific and the artistic part of the museum quarter.
