Artwork as philosophical quotation
Die unendliche Falte ist das Charakteristikum des Barock, 2007/2016 (the infinite fold is the characteristic of the Baroque) is a quotation from the book The Fold: Leibniz and the Baroque by Gilles Deleuze, handwritten in neon by Brigitte Kowanz. Significantly, this sentence folds upwards on the magnificent staircase of the Museum of History, towards the Baroque ceiling painting. "The private sphere of the manuscript is written into our consciousness here at the philosophical problem of the separation of soul and body", explains Elisabeth Fiedler, director of the Institute for Art in Public Space Styria. "Going back to the Leibnizian thesis, which sees the human soul as a monad, as a self-contained unit, Deleuze opens up passages between body and soul through the concept of the fold," she continues.
The internationally renowned Austrian artist Brigitte Kowanz donated her work to the Universalmuseum Joanneum. "The work Die Unendliche Falte ist das Charakteristikum des Barock, 2007/2016 (the infinite fold is the characteristic of the Baroque) is in very good hands at the Museum of History, both in terms of space and content. Light is information and medium of knowledge. Thus the work is not only meant to be a bridge between the city of Graz and the museum but also between history and the present. This is why I have decided to turn the temporary loan into a permanent donation", explained Brigitte Kowanz in February 2019.
