About the
Exhibition

The farming year was inextricably linked to the rhythm of the seasons. The course of nature determined work and rest through the phases of growth and ripening. A wealth of customs and traditions developed from hard everyday labour and rest, the high points in the course of life and the combination of abandonment and deep piety.

Both the Enlightenment (18th century) and the Industrial Revolution (19th century) led to radical social change. The latter replaced the symbiotic connection between everyday life and the natural course of the year as well as the importance of collective habits and regional customs. On the other hand, changing living conditions brought about new elements in historically evolved customs or gave rise to new traditions.
