About the
Exhibition

In addition to the buildings, the holistic presentation of an open-air museum also includes the surroundings, the cultural landscape around them, woods and meadows, fields and home gardens. Our 2012 thematic focus provides insights into the development, use and diversity of farm gardens.

A house can live for many hundreds of years, a plant, with the exception of a few trees, does not reach this age. A garden is a dynamic structure, it lives from change, it cannot be transported or relocated. Reconstructions are shown based on the knowledge of which plants were once planted, how they were planted and for what purpose.

The flowering garden of a farmhouse has a long history and has been subject to various influences and fashions. Protected by a fence, it was always right next to the house and formed a single unit with it. The farm garden was always a kitchen garden, this means all the plants in it were utilised. The garden provided what the family needed to live, vegetables, aromatic herbs, medicinal plants and later also flowers that were needed for church or family celebrations. Anything that did not prove successful or was of no use to anyone was subsequently no longer cultivated.
