About the
Event

Erwartung by Arnold Schönberg is an expressionist monodrama from 1909 that depicts the psychological turmoil of a woman in a hopeless world in a one-person opera. The free-tonal harmony of the 35-minute orchestral work, which is performed at Kunsthaus Graz in the piano version with soprano Laure-Catherine Beyers and pianist Andrey Doynikov, intensifies and reinforces the protagonist's expression of fear and forlornness.

The plot revolves around a woman who is waiting for her lover, but whose return remains uncertain. The escalating psychological tension, which is also reflected in the music, brings the opera to a dramatic and surprising conclusion.
