Cosima Roth’s intervention on the BIX is a continuation of her series Für Artemis (For Artemis), a collection of symbols that together form a secret language. This series of works began in a sculptural form, evolved into a deck of oracle cards through linocuts, was painted as protective symbols on a house wall and has been repeatedly printed for textile works. The deliberate play in these repetitions and further developments is an essential aspect of the work and Roth’s search for an approach to timelessness.
In the transfer of her secret language to the media facade of the Kunsthaus, which Cosima Roth has realised with the technical support of Jacob Gypser, these symbols take on their largest dimension to date: from an oracle card deck, small and private, to the 900 m2 BIX, oversize and public. Some of the symbols allude to occult archetypes, in part dreamed up by Roth. They are beamed prominently into urban space. The secret message? The secret language itself.
Our attempts to read these charged images inevitably lead to associations. Viewers become interpreters of their own subconscious, much like an oracle.
