The Kunsthaus continues its series in which contemporary artists and designers play a part in designing our furnishings, engaging at various levels with the functions, routines and needs of the institution. Seedling

Our starting-point was Lukas Klingsbichel studio for design’s Seedling pendant luminaire, which has been hanging in the Kunsthaus since the last Designmonat festival in 2018. The positive response has confirmed that we are on the right track: This was followed by Rock Light by 13 & 9 Design, HangOn by Johannes Scherr Design and shirt rescue by milli lux. In 2019, Lukas Klingsbichel studio for design replaced the Seedlings with Artificial Fruits.

So the Kunsthaus continues its series in which contemporary artists and designers play a part in designing our furnishings, engaging at various levels with the functions, routines and needs of the institution. Our designs and arrangements ensure that, unconventionally, visitors encounter art and design from the moment they enter the Kunsthaus at ground-floor level.

Artificial Fruit – Lukas Klingsbichel studio for design

The lampshade Artificial Fruit is one of a series of shapes created in the course of working with digital surface modelling. A new tool, which makes it possible to imitate botanical shapes, windings of washed-out coralstones or scale structures and brings about an aesthetic which evokes associacions and emotions almost naturally.

In the case of this lampshade, the use of PLA, a biodegradable sugar-based plastic, produces a man-made product that comes close to a naturally grown fruit. The 3D-printed lampshade can alter any conventional pendant lighting socket using a “SnapOn" feature, developed by the studio.

shirt rescue – milli lux

"The shirt rescue project aims to give old favourite shirts the chance to shine from the ceiling, in exciting company, for their second life. So rooms are filled not just with light, but with memories too." (Barbara Stölzl)

The Graz lighting brand milli lux has been making fabric lampshades from re-used cotton since 2011. The idea of working with used T-shirts came about during a project on sustainable and fair consumption in 2017.

HangOn – Johannes Scherr Design

Rock Light – 13 & 9 Design

“The inspiration for this came from the image of a camp fire with people dancing around it, producing a vivid interplay of light and shadow in the surroundings. It features a three-dimensional figure attached asymmetrically to the light fitting in various different poses. So different shapes are created, depending on the perspective. When the light is switched on, HangOn casts a vivid shadow across the wall.” (Johannes Scherr)

HangOn is made of synthetic resin. The lamps can be used as an individual object or as part of an ensemble in which they interact and communicate with one another.

Johannes Scherr Design works for Austrian and international companies in the fields of mobility, furniture, product, packaging and industrial design.
