About the
Project

Space05 is host to a glittering light object: EPHEMERE. This opulent chandelier takes as its theme the ambiguous properties between forms of functionality, as an ornamental object, as a light sculpture and also – embracing a thoroughly critical perspective on consumerism – acts as a site-specific intervention in “free” art space.

a glittering light object

EPHEMERE (“ephemeral” = transient, fleeting) is made up of thousands of one-cent coins. Initially, its glamour recalls the shimmering chandeliers typical of the fin de siècle, of the art deco period. At a second glance, however, it is clear that these copper coins allude to the transience of values, to the fleeting nature of money in itself and also to European banks’ imminent plans to do away with “worthless” one- and two-cent coins.
