Publication for CalArts

This guide is published to accompany the exhibition Where Art Might Happen. The Early Years of CalArts at the Kunsthaus Graz, 13 March to 7 June 2020.

This exhibition opens up a multi-perspectival view of the important founding years (1970–1980) at the California Institute of the Arts, or CalArts, when hierarchies between teachers and students did not exist, nor were there any set curricula or grading systems. It draws together for the first time the various strands of conceptual art, feminist art and Fluxus practised at CalArts, and also its radical teaching concepts.

The exhibition was curated for the Kestner Gesellschaft in Hanover by Philipp Kaiser (freelance curator) and Christina Végh (Kunsthalle Bielefeld), whose comprehensive text discusses their curatorial concept for the exhibition.

At the Kunsthaus Graz, the exhibition has been expanded by curators Barbara Steiner and Katrin Bucher Trantow to include Austrian positions related, connected or parallel to CalArts. These are described in the article by Katrin Bucher Trantow and Elisabeth Schlögl.

With texts explaining the works by the over forty artists featured, the publication serves as an accompanying guide to the exhibition.
