In the Flesh

The body as evidence of our existence—as a witness to ourselves—is a shell to all that moves us. Flemish artist Berlinde De Bruyckere (*1964 in Ghent, lives and works in Ghent) investigates how we deal with the figure, image of the self and the finality of the body. She examines questions of existence and finds an enduring sculptural language of empathy.

The catalogue to the exhibition in the Kunsthaus Graz contains numerous illustrations of the sculptures and watercolours on show as well as a series of texts: following a preface by Peter Pakesch, curator Katrin Bucher Trantow’s essay focuses on the image of humans presented by De Bruyckere, who is Belgium’s representative at the Venice Biennale 2013. Elisabeth Schlebrügge traces mythological motives in her works, and K. Ludwig Pfeiffer explores disorders between the body and soul.
