Designed as a photovoltaic system, the disc of light, measuring six meters in diameter and installed at a height of twelve meters, is as an artificial sun that provides light around the clock. Like an eye, it absorbs light, but then emits it again in the dark and ideally illuminates the roundabout 24 hours a day.
At this point seventy meters below ground, work is being carried out on the Koralm Tunnel, which, with a length of 32.2 kilometers, will connect Deutschlandsberg to the Lavant Valley and thus create a fast connection between Graz and Klagenfurt. As an extension, the Sun’s Eye will give a light signal in the future whenever a train passes underground.
In the work, the depths of the earth symbolically intersect with the light of the sun. Moreover, the use of solar technology points to a sustainable and far-sighted energy economy.
