Pedro Cabrita Reis, a renowned Portuguese contemporary artist, works in his installations with residual and building material from civilization. Again and again, he creates new spaces or reinterprets old ones. Invited by Peter Pakesch to Southeast Styria years ago, he remained fascinated by the brick lattice architecture of the region.
From his investigations into space, architecture and cultural memory, into collective and individual remembrance, he formed a new space in this patch of forest in Poppendorf that engages in a dialogue with its surroundings. Assembly/Versammlung is an autonomous work of art and at the same time a (furniture) sculpture. 21 benches assembled with bricks, on which just as many lyrical pairs of words are engraved, enable a spatial poem to arise in the forest. This reveals a new reality and a basis for communication, but also for introspection and serenity.
A project by the Institute of Public Art Styria, initiated by Peter Pakesch. Supported by Marktgemeinde Gnas, Land Steiermark Kultur and Wienerberger.
