The Swiss Artists Petruschka und Hannes Vogel reworked the Marienplatz in Graz. A public square, which was previously ignored by city planners and virtually unusable. They aimed to “shed light” on the historical and contextual aspects of the square and its surroundings in the most literal sense of the word. After conducting research, they displayed their findings by embedding relevant annual figures in the square’s ground and installing corresponding texts inside the adjoining building’s lobby. This project was chosen by the Institute of Public Art Styria via an art competition and was realized in cooperation with the city of Graz.
The concept uses the stylistic language of urban space. The crosswalk is referenced by granite lines, defining a new space for pedestrians spanning from the Rondo’s entrance across the Marienplatz square towards the Kepplerstraße. The historic Maria Pillar was integrated as a “historical witness”.
