The Schenkkellergarten is located at the foot of the castle complex. The Schenkkeller, which gives the garden its name, is located in the entrance area of the garden, which is otherwise a natural meadow with old fruit trees. Schloss Stainz was founded as an Augustinian canons' monastery in 1229. In its present appearance, it has roots in both the Renaissance and Baroque periods. It sits enthroned in perhaps the most charming part of western Styria, where the Blaue Wildbacher - the Schilcher grape - thrives best. Today, the imposing castle houses the Joanneum's hunting museum and agricultural museum and serves as the Meran family's residence and business domicile.
