Iron-Age-Danube

Monumentalized Early Iron Age Landscapes in the Danube river basin

The aim of the Iron-Age -Danube project was researching the rich archaeological heritage of the early Iron Age (Hallstatt period) by using state-of-the-art methods, which the Universalmuseum Joanneum was tackling with eleven project partners and nine associated partners from five countries for two and a half years.

The activities ranged from the development of an international strategy for the supra-regional protection and sustainable use of archaeological landscapes to archaeological field research with the latest technical equipment as part of international research camps and new digital and analog offers for tourists in selected micro-regions, including the most important Hallstatt period sites in Hungary, Croatia and Slovenia as well as Großklein and Strettweg, the site of the world-famous cult chariot.
