Marko Mele graduated in archaeology from the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Ljubljana in 2003. As part of his doctoral studies, he was a DAAD research fellow at the Institute for Prehistoric Archaeology at the Free University of Berlin from October 2004 to September 2005. He received his doctorate from the University of Ljubljana in 2009. His research focuses on the Bronze Age and Early Iron Age in the south-eastern Alps.
After returning to Slovenia from Germany in 2005, Marko Mele was employed as an archaeologist at the Ptuj-Ormož Regional Museum. There he completed his state examination as a museum curator in 2006. From 2007 to 2009, he worked as an auditor of EU projects at the Government Office of the Republic of Slovenia for Local Self-Government and Regional Policy.
From 2010 to 2022, he was Chief Curator for the Prehistory and Early History Collection at the Universalmuseum Joanneum, and has also been Deputy Head of the Archaeology & Coin Cabinet Department since 2017.
He acquired the ISO certificate for cultural managers in 2013.Over the past decade, he has managed several European projects at the Joanneum, including InterArch-Steiermark, PalaeoDiversiStyria, Iron-Age-Danube and Danube's Archaeological eLandscapes.Iron-Age-Danube was a finalist for RegioStars, an award for the most innovative projects in the EU, in 2018. This project also gave rise to the transnational Iron Age Danube Route, which was certified as a Council of Europe Cultural Route.
For the success of the EU projects, Marko Mele received an award from the Slovenian Archaeological Association in 2022 for his outstanding contribution to Slovenian archaeology.
In addition, he supervised students in their archaeological education as a lecturer at the Institute of Antiquity at the Karl-Franzens University of Graz.He is a member of the Slovenian Archaeological Association, correspondent of the Historical Commission for Styria, member of the European Association of Archaeologists and the Austrian Society for Prehistory and Early History. He was a member of the board of the Friends of Eggenberg Palace and its collections.
Marko Mele has been Director of Science since January 1, 2023.
