This year marks the 250th anniversary of the birth of Friederich Mohs (29.1.1773-29.9.1839). Mohs was the first curator and professor of mineralogy at the Joanneum in Graz and completed work on his 10-part scratch hardness scale for minerals around 1815/16. Decades ago, the Universalmuseum Joanneum was therefore referred to as the "cradle of Mohs' hardness scale". This hardness scale, which was long regarded as an original object, can now be seen again in an updated context after more than 20 years.
