Coin Cabinet Coins are more than just a means of payment - they also reveal something about political power and the culture of different societies! The Coin Cabinet shows the coinage and the circulation of coins in Styria from antiquity to the Baroque era.

The Eggenberg Family and the Power of Money

The exhibition presents the rise, splendour and decline of the Eggenberg dynasty based on the coins they minted. In addition, examples of the diversity of coinage in the Holy Roman Empire in the 17th century are presented.

The exhibition also sheds light on the monetary history of the time, when the coinage system collapsed at the beginning of the Thirty Years' War and Emperor Ferdinand II had to overcome a financial crisis that was tantamount to national bankruptcy.

The special exhibition The Eggenberg Family and the Power of Money is shown as part of SHOWING STYRIA 2025.
