Maria Lassnig is one of the most important contemporary artists and can be seen as a pioneer in many areas of art today. Her development from Surrealism and Tachism to representational painting was always determined by the problem of perception. Visual perception in general and bodily self-awareness are her fields of enquiry within painting and film.

Stimulated by current results from visual studies, Lassnig’s work can be viewed from a special angle, making it open to new reception. Her work can thus be understood as a vital contribution to an applied critique of the image.
