Excursion and workshop in cooperation with the German Forum for Art History (DFK Paris)

Registration required!

The colonial history of France, the world expositions and an early awareness of the museum as a powerful instrument for forming national identity have made Paris a metropolis of museums and mark the coordinates within which any modern museum and exhibition of the city is realised today. We will pursue the question of how different ideas of the museum deal with the political and museal history of France today and the global challenges that go along with it, and discuss how images of “own” and “other” are constructed here in an examination of the overarching ideas of an imaginary museum or even a world museum. This will lead us to focus on existing museums such as the Musée du quai Branly (Quay Branly Museum) or the Cité Nationale de l’Histoire de l’Immigration (National Museum of the History of Immigration), as well as projects in development such as the Musée de l’Homme (Museum of Man), the hotly debated Maison de l’Histoire de France or the controversial outpost of the Louvre in Abu Dhabi.
